The first CORN BROOM SPIEL took place Saturday March 3 at the Rideau Curling Club in Ottawa. Only 2 teams were game enough to participate but did they look eager. The entry fee included a new corn broom and a lesson for those who have never swept with this lethal weapon.
The event was organized by Art Miskew (pictured in house on left) who began curling with corn. One participant said a lot of grit got under the stone so the thrower had to make sure his rock was very clean before throwing. It was also rough on the hands if one didn't hold the broom in the right way.
The brooms are from Hamel Brooms in St. Jacob, Ontario. No one makes them anymore. Hamel will make them but only a minimum of four. They make the brooms to order but aren't exactly like the original corn brooms. The leather strip is very thin. The handles are longer and thicker.
These curlers should expect some very sore (from seldom used) muscles.
