Ready for new season. Three-time world curling champion Glenn Howard is excited about the 2011-2012 curling season. In a month, Howard, Wayne Middaugh, Craig Savill and Brent Laing will play their first World Curling Tour event in Brockville. Mike Dodd
It’s shaping up to be an exciting season on the World Curling Tour for the three-time world champion, as his Coldwater and District Curling Club rink has undergone roster changes. And, as always, Howard has one eye on the 2014 Winter Olympics. “Yes, when you stop and think about it, with the Olympics coming up and the qualification events, this is an important year for us,” said Howard. “Playing well this season sets us up well for 2012-13 and the Olympic year,” he added. Orillia Today recently sat down with Howard for a wide-ranging conversation. It’ll be a busy 12-16 week competitive season for the team, with the WCT season opening in mid-September in Brockville. Team Howard veteran third Richard Hart elected to retire from competitive curling earlier this spring and his spot will be filled by former world champion Wayne Middaugh. Brent Laing and Craig Savill will join Howard and Middaugh, along with coach Scott Taylor. With a top-three ranking in the world and three bonspiel wins in 2010-2011, Howard said last season was a positive one. Yet some curling fans and journalists made hay of his championship loss at the 2011 Brier, something Howard shrugs off as a blip. “The point is we’re getting there and in the case of last year’s Brier final, it was probably the best game Jeff Stoughton and his team have ever played. It was good for them to put it together at that time. We had a great game and it just wasn’t enough,” he said. Howard said he hates finishing second at any bonspiel and that’s what motivates him to compete at age 49. One of the special events Howard and his team will attend this year is the 2011 Continental Cup, scheduled for January in British Columbia. Although still three years off, the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia is the prize at the end of the rainbow. Having claimed a world title with Middaugh in Geneva, Switzerland in 1993 as part of Russ Howard’s rink, Glenn said taking one last shot at an Olympic title with Middaugh makes having him on board extra special this season. “Wayne and I had four or five great years together with Russ and Peter (Corner), and then for the past 15-16 years, we’ve curled together on Tuesday nights and played together in bonspiels. We’ve both had the same goal of wanting to get to the Olympics,” said Howard. Ready for new season
